SEVEN QUESTIONS

AND THE TRUTH ABOUT THE NDH

by Suzanne Brooks-Pincevic

Croatian historian, Dr Josip Jurcevic, specialist in WWII “Bleiburg” history,

and guest on the Hrvati-Amac website in October 2005,

avoided answering seven “Bleiburg” questions.

A month before, viewers to the site were invited to submit questions for Dr Jurcevic to answer.   By the end of September there were some 50 questions submitted by about 16 people.  Amongst whom the writer was one. The writer’s six questions arrived about mid-way in the list, and because the writer’s questions were in English, most were translated at the end of the month into Croatian – not once, but twice, and so the writer’s questions appeared four times – twice in English and twice in Croatian.

Dr Jurcevic arrived on the website on 2nd October 2005 to answer the questions.  He did not commence at the beginning, but instead answered the questions that came immediately after those of the writer. He answered all the questions to the end of the list.  The following day he returned to the site and answered the rest of the questions that had preceded those of the writer, except for one.   So, that one question, and the writer’s six, remained unanswered.  A member of the site asked why Dr Jurcevic had omitted to answer the seven remaining questions?  He was told that Dr Jurcevic intended to answer all of them and would return.  That was over a month ago.  To the writer’s knowledge Dr Jurcevic has since been reminded twice.  Yet the questions still remain unanswered.

What is now more than obvious, is that Dr Jurcevic has deliberately avoided these seven questions.  And not only is this rude but also his conduct is most unprofessional – given that any creditable historian welcomes a challenge, and the opportunity to discuss his theories.  One is therefore compelled to ask WHY Dr Jurcevic has chosen not to answer the writer’s questions?

It cannot be because he has no time – a more than sufficient period has elapsed.

It cannot be because he is unable to read the questions – they were translated twice.

It cannot be because he did not notice them – they appeared four times.

It cannot be because he does not know the answers – he has a doctorate in this history.

Let us then have a look at those six questions, and as to why Jurcevic has found them a problem to answer:

1)         How big numerically were the NDH Armed Forces and exactly how many divisions made up the domobrans and the ustasa?

A simple question any thorough researcher of this history would know.  It was the simplest, but the MOST important, of all the 50 questions asked of Jurcevic, because the answer to THIS question opens the door to the REASON for the murder of over half-a-million patriotic Croats; whose fight was mainly an internal war against Serb and/or communist tyranny in their OWN land – NOT the world war being fought in the other countries around them. The NDH Armed Forces were a lot bigger and more efficient than the current government wants you to believe.  This was why they were a threat to establishing another Yugoslavia and the reason why so many were slaughtered.

When the REASON for their death, and what they fought for, is ignored, how can respect be given?  It cannot be given and it is NOT given.  When this question is answered truthfully, it reveals that there were hundreds of thousands of Croats in the NDH who believed a free Croatia was worth fighting for – and THAT gives the Domobrans, the Ustasa, and the NDH regime the RESPECT they deserve. A truthful answer to this question shows WHY the communists massacred half-a-million people – it was so that communist Yugoslavia could exist.

This question was necessary, because noticeably almost all detail about the NDH has been avoided in the many books written recently by Jurcevic and his colleagues. Therefore there can be no doubt that these deliberate omissions adhere to a well-known newspaper adage – “what is not recorded did not happen”.

The truthful answer to this question would be:  In all 19 divisions: Domobrans approximately 100,400 (43%). In all 19 divisions: Ustasas approximately 132,900 (57%). In total approx.233,300  (100%).

To this needs to be added the various infantry divisions still training in Germany just before the end of the war  (eg: 369th Devils division, 373rd Tiger division, 392nd Blue division), plus the assisting branches MINORSA which included medical, educational and financial personnel, plus there was the Airforce, Navy and Rangers.  Adding many more to the number – in fact well over 300,000 personnel at the END of the war.

BUT – of course, this large number goes against the current HDZ Government policy of minimizing the numbers who were in the NDH.  The government wants us to believe there were only a few thousand, not hundreds of thousands, they want us to believe that the NDH was a non-entity, a non-state, that it virtually did not exist.  They refuse to recognize their absolute determination – that went beyond massive odds – NOT to give in to Serb or Communist domination, that they were NOT fascists, that they were totally focused ONLY in fighting for an independent Croatian state. So what does that mean?  It means the government can continue to fool the world into believing the NDH victims were “fascists” killed by “a few revengeful liberators” and with these lies the mass murderers continue to escape justice and “democratic” commos stay in power (for life!) This is the ultimate REASON their huge sacrifice is not acknowledged. Croatia’s neo-communist government is supported in this subterfuge by manipulative foreign powers who are happy to use this blackmail over the Croatian public, in order to continue a century of control over the Croatian state to further their own interests.

It is true that people employed by the current government have erected a monument; they have written books about the terrible tragedy to their people; they made a special occasion for commemoration.  But all of this is a big HYPOCRISY by which they are trying to win your trust and support.  It cunningly camouflages the fact that NOWHERE have they given any credit to the NDH, nor any credit to those who died fighting for a free Croatia. All they have actually given them is PITY. And pity is an insult to the Croatian Armed Forces and their families, particularly when given by today’s UDBA and the descendents of the communists who murdered them.

Jurcevic’s book “Bleiburg” is a good example of the how the NDH, and the REASON for the deaths of its patriots, have been ignored. Last month a review was done of the book in Australia and the reviewer states that:  “the [book] title is misleading because it is more about the rise to power of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) during WWII, than about “Bleiburg”…the book gives a very detailed description of the formation and implementation of CPY police apparatus (later called UDBA).”  The reviewer records that:  “the Ustashi movement is not mentioned much at all except from the point of view that it was the other party in this conflict. There was nothing new in the book on the [British] conspiracy and there was no new information on Bleiburg and the Death Marches than we already know”.

Careful scrutiny of this, and other recent “Bleiburg” publications that have come from the same HDZ Government-sponsored sources (another is “Bleiburg Memento” by Jurcevic’s colleague Bozo Vukusic), reveal that firstly, huge tracts of information about the NDH are missing, and secondly, behind the words and photos (carefully chosen to please the unsuspecting majority of Croatian readers), there is a meticulously contrived vein of dis-information running through the books, which undermines the NDH and the Croatian Armed Forces – inferring that they were stupid, mis-guided followers of a small group of brutal idealists. Hence they are given PITY – not respect.  At the same time the Communist Party are shown as intelligent victors in successfully obtaining Yugoslavia.  Though some criticism is made against the partisans for brutal acts against the Croatian Armed Forces and innocent victims, this is shown as being done by so-called “elite” troops out of so-called “revenge by the liberators” for what was supposed to have been done to the partisans.  A lot of undeserved credit is given to the partisans and a big excuse for the cold-blooded murders they committed.  The NDH is being eradicated from history and its diminished followers recognized only with pity. This is the true agenda of these books.

Jurcevic would have to know by now the truth about the numbers of the NDH military.  But the truthful answer is contrary to government policy and the government pays his salary – and so presumably, for that reason, it was prudent for him not to answer the question. If he were truthful he would have gone against government policy, if he lied he would eventually be exposed – or made to appear a fool.

2)         Prof. Michael McAdams has given considerable credit to John Ivan Prcela for his book "Operation Slaughterhouse" which he considers is “a definitive work on the Bleiburg Tragedy” and he also gave Prcela credit for organizing the first scientific symposium on the Bleiburg Tragedy in 1973.  And yet in your book "Cuvari Bleiburske Uspomene” you omit giving credit to Prcela, as the principal speaker and organizer of that symposium in 1973.

3)         Furthermore you have been quoted as saying that Prcela, Guldescu and their contemporaries are not appropriate and accurate sources for Croatian history. You are also quoted as saying the same thing about Prcela’s book, "Hrvatski Holokaust I" (of which you were the resencent).  What have Prcela and his contemporaries written to warrant your disapproval as being inaccurate and/or inappropriate?  Please give at least three examples.

In commenting on the above two questions I would advise that John Prcela received arguments from Drs Jurcevic and Zivic (from the Ivo Pilar Institute) to alter sections of his book to conform to their ideas of that history, but he consistently refused to do so. He told them “he is against watering-down his knowledge and total life’s work about the biggest tragedy in Croatia’s history”.   John Prcela – and his contemporaries – wrote openly about the NDH and the Ustasa.  They wrote the truth about their aspirations for an independent Croatia.  It is for that reason Prcela and his contemporaries have been ignored.  Not because they were “inappropriate or inaccurate sources for Croatian history” – after all, from whom, and when did Jurcevic and his colleague Dr Zivic get most of their non-communist-based information?  It was when they assisted Prcela to print his book Hrvatski Holokaust and his many records came into their possession.

4)         You have been recorded as saying that "what is acceptable for the American and international book readers [with regard to "Bleiburg] "is not acceptable for the Croatian public".  What exactly do you mean by that - are you saying that Croatians cannot handle the truth?

A lot of the truth is now surfacing in Croatia, notably without causing any undue concern amongst the people.  In keeping with the government’s policy to obliterate any reference about the NDH, this remark would seem to have been used as an excuse to prevent the spread of books in Croatia that reveal the truth of what happened in the region of Yugoslavia during and after WWII, particularly with the NDH.

5)         In your book "Cuvari Bleiburske Uspomene" you claim a smaller portion of the Croatian exodus crossed the border into Austria and that the partisans stopped the much larger portion before they crossed the Austrian border.  This is contrary to statements held in the British military archives.  Therefore, from where did you get this information which refutes the British recordings made at that time by their military personnel in the area and substantiated by air reconnaissance?

This would appear to be another attempt to portray the partisans as an efficient and powerful combat force. When in fact they were the opposite. A general impression recorded at the time by various British officers was that they regarded Tito’s troops as “a murderous, thieving rabble - with minimal fighting potential”. They were no match for the Croatian Armed Forces and could not possibly have prevented the huge mass of refugees, who were being escorted by the Croatian Army in combat mode, from crossing the Austrian border. Both British records and eyewitness accounts support this fact. The partisans only gained the upper hand when the British confiscated all the weapons from the Croatian soldiers and left them defenceless.

6)         As we know, Vladko Macek projected himself as a leader of the Croatian people.  But just prior to WWII he not only sold out to Belgrade, but during the war he also chose to sit on the fence, with his hands in the air, and left his many followers floundering without any positive leadership.  Therefore what did Macek do, or attempt to do, that was for the good of Croatia during the period of WWII and the days leading up to it, that he deserves the considerable credit you give him in your book "Bleiburg"?

Pavelic failed to achieve his final goal, but at least he tried. He did not fail because he was on the losing  side, but because the Allies had their own plans for Croatia, cemented by the Versailles pact long before WWII, and had absolutely no intention of accommodating Croatian sovereignty.  Despite all these odds stacked against him, Pavelic did his best in difficult times. He took the opportunity presented, constrained though it was, to wrench his people out of the grip of slavitude. There was no one else who even came close to making a positive effort for the freedom of Croatia. Macek, who the majority of people looked up to, sold out to an enemy who openly professed that its ultimate aim was to take all of Croatia for itself. He was nothing less than a traitor.  When the time came to show some courage and leadership he failed to perform.  He sat out the war safely tucked away, and when given a chance at the end of the war to negotiate for an independent Croatia on behalf of his people he failed once again to take the initiative.  Though it is highly unlikely he would have even remotely succeeded, what is more to the point, is that he did not even try, but opted again for “Yugoslavia!”

The 7th unanswered question was asked by Damir Borovcak, author of “Hello Toronto – Ovdje Zagreb” and former editor of Focus. This was his question [translated into English by the writer]:

7)         Postovani g. dr. Jurcevic,

I would like to know how much the Croatian government needs you ?

You are acknowleged as an authority, and have a doctorate, in the subject of crimes committed against Croatians after WWII, and you also work professionally on the issues of the Domovinski Rat.  Please tell me truthfully:  Did anyone contact you from the current Croatian Government, or from the President's office, about the historical facts regarding the genocide of Croatians published in documents or articles, or have you ever been engaged on that theme for your professional opinion, or for the gathering of historical facts for the purpose of showing the truth to the world of the historical oppression of Croatians ?

Zahvaljujem,  DBorovcak

As with the other six questions, it would appear that Dr Josip Jurcevic was also unable to answer this question without compromising himself.  His inability to answer these seven questions indicates that he is not being upfront, and suggests that he, and his colleagues, have a programme that is different to the one they are showing to the Croatian public. His actions are made more questionable by his close association with Bozo Vukusic, who has a dubious record of UDBA connections, and a life-sentence for murder in a German prison that he was inexplicably able to walk free from – just before the Domovinski Rat – oddly, into a government position of studying Croatian victims of WWII.  The fact that these two are now involving ministers of the Catholic Church, in the distribution and circulation of their contrived books is most disturbing.  The Church needs to be aware of the duplicity of the conduct of dubious government employees who are benefitting from achieving their destructive agenda through the auspices of the Catholic Church.

Disastrous Consequences from  "Bleiburg" DIS-information

All the above confirms the statements made in my article "Hypocrisy – or What?" which was published  just prior to the 60th Bleiburg Commemoration in the Spremnost 19 April 2005, and other newspapers, as well as the Hrvati-Amac website (in English and later Croatian).  In this article the writer drew attention to the manner in which the current HDZ Government historians, and untrustworthy government operatives, have infiltrated "Bleiburg" organizations and are manipulating the "Bleiburg" history for their own devious purposes by providing a monument and a (strategically ill-planned) day of recognition – but most importantly by creating books that appear to the unsuspecting reader to be good publications, when in fact they cleverly pave the way for the eventual destruction of the truth of the ”Bleiburg" history.  This is all being done in the Croatian language, right under your noses, by a government who has on numerous occasions shown its true colours about NOT recognizing the NDH, or any Croatian leaders of that time. They now dominate the honouring and recording of this vital history, and are making fools of the Croatian immigrants by manipulating "Bleiburg" the immigrants' greatest symbol of sacrifice in their struggle for a free nation – to their own advantage.

How long will it take to rout so many traitors from Croatia's midst? How long before Croats have the gumption to stand up to their bullies – local and foreign - and demand respect?  Why is it so difficult to tell the world they did not invade any other country in WWII; that Croatia fought in self-defence, against Serb and Communist tyranny, for its independent state? So simple. Yet so hard to overcome the huge ignorance and bizarre apathy amongst the people.

It would be extremely naive to say that this old "Bleiburg" history has nothing to do with today's politics. The bad propaganda arising from it is used extensively in accusations coming from The Hague, and by Serb extremists (and the Croatian President, Stjepan Mesic ! ) who exploit it to their advantage with absurd and illogical fabrications about ”Jasenovac" and ”Krajina".  But more than that, it provides Croatia's enemies with a moralistic weapon demanding atonement, which impinges on all aspects of Croatia's aspirations today in Europe. Overtones from this incorrect propaganda are laced into the EU's crippling criteria for Croatia's compliance to gain entry to the EU – a criteria that would shackle Croatia again to powerful overlords to profit from.  Crippling debts and the Banks all in foreign hands, are an early indication of such exploitation by European powers, through the manipulation of weak and selfish Croatian Government Ministers.

This is why the truth about Bleiburg and the NDH is SO vitally important for Croatians to accept and broadcast to the world if they want to keep their country from being blackmailed by its enemies with erroneous anti-Croat WWII propaganda.  It is this propaganda that forms the base of all their accusations (The Hague, Jasenovac, Krajina). They are trying very hard, and unfortunately they are slowly but surely succeeding, in making another Pavelic out of Tudjman, another Luburic out of Gotovina and an NDH out of the new Croatian state by saying it too was not legitimate. The Croatian population today blissfully go about their business, enjoying booming tourism and swanky new markets full of foreign goods, ignorant of the fact that in truth they are a nation at war, wherein the weapons are not bullets but propaganda and economics.  Why are their enemies doing this?  What do they want?  Croatia of course – the best Real Estate In Europe.

BLACK SHADOWS OVER GOTOVINA

It is not without reason that Britain was long regarded in Europe

 as the Vampire Isles

by Suzanne Brooks-Pincevic

The article by Meb Cutlack, "The Capture of Croat General" published in the Majorca Daily Bulletin this week, astutely summed up the situation regarding General Ante Gotovina and the current government in Croatia:

……”Because of his popularity through ‘Operation Storm' he was considered a ‘threat' to politicians of both parties and particularly a threat to the current President of Croatia, Stipe Mesic…….To suggest that Gotovina's arrest will solve Croatia's problems about EU entry disregards the real problems the country faces. Lurking just beneath the surface of business and economic life throughout the country is an octopus of corruption with its tentacles reaching into government itself. Chop off one arm and the creature grows another, making its insidious way through cement and chemical factories, shipyards, hotels, fish factories and every form of previously state-owned companies”…...

Neither Mesic nor Sanader - nor most of the current government - would welcome a free Gotovina into their political arena, because his tremendous popularity with the public would ensure him a leadership role which would put them permanently out of a job. And there is little doubt that the corruption within Croatia, as mentioned in the article, is an octopus whose tentacles are crippling the country, and that there would be major changes to reverse this corruption were Gotovina in a position to do something about it.

So of course neither Mesic nor Sanader, nor Racan, would have been going out of their way to annul the indictment against Gotovina. The longer he stayed in hiding the better it suited them.  Now that he's caught it will also suit them if the legal battle in the Hague is drawn out for as long as possible - and even better if he is found guilty of "SOMETHING" and locked away for a long time so as to leave them free to carry on their abuse of Croatia's sovereignty.

But the article by Meb Cutlack missed the much bigger threat to Gotovina's freedom.  This threat lies in the manipulations by British officials, politicians, agents and NCOs, which now saturate the country.  Britain has been entrenching itself in Croatia since the outbreak of the Homeland war, when Lords Carrington and Owen descended on the area with their so-called "advice".

For over a century Britain has manipulated the politics in the region to secure its own interests.  With problems continually fermenting within the EU its position there is fragile. So as soon as trouble erupted in Yugoslavia it ensured it was there to safeguard those interests and grab a strong foothold in the crumbling fabric of Yugoslavia.  It has been consolidating that foothold ever since, with stronger and longer tentacles spreading into every corner of Croatia's administration – and Bosnia-Hercegovina too with Paddy Ashdown acting the King of B-H!  So sly and deceitful is their diplomacy that they even managed to get themselves invited into Croatia's Intelligence Service to assist in the search for Gotovina.

The Spanish and Croatian police were only the “public-faces”, the front men, in the capture of Gotovina.  Just the same as Carla del Ponte is the “public-face” in the Hague Courts, to absorb all the flak the trials create. Those truly responsible sit carefully hidden behind the curtain of respectability and civility, cleverly pulling the strings – they are the formidable purveyors of British interests. They will smile and shake your hand, slap you on the back and say how wonderfully you are doing. What marvellous people you are.  But behind their closed doors they laugh at how easy they can influence you, they put scorn on your aspirations and treat you with absolutely no respect. And you have only yourselves to blame, because you have done NOTHING to deserve their respect.  They despise traitors. Your leaders have shown themselves to be weak, foolish and selfish.  And as a people you have not demonstrated, since the Homeland war, that you have any strength or moral fibre, only self-indulgence and apathy. If they can use you, and make fools of you, and rob you, they will.  They have the power to do it, but it was your choice to let them. If you want to join the significant countries of the world you have to show that you have the fortitude necessary to be amongst them and thus gain the RESPECT of these countries.  So far you have earned only their CONTEMPT (but they won’t tell you that!)

There was no need for Croatia to have sunk to these depths – it had the means and the ability to withstand foreign pressures – it only needed leaders with integrity and gumption, who would put COUNTRY BEFORE SELF.  Croatia should have closed the door against interference from the West.  It does not need the EU – a monster it is best to stay clear from.  Croatia had enough resources to withstand sanctions should they have been imposed.  It could have risen above that.  It has a huge pool of patriots overseas only too willing to help put the country on its feet, given a fair chance instead of discrimination from their own.

By manipulating the politicians, the news media and the voters, Britain and America ensured that Mesic gained the Presidency.  Their patsy was in place to do their bidding, and the door was wide open. Croatia is fast becoming a colony of Britain in every way except on paper – but in today’s politics that is of little significance. So Britain, even more than Mesic, would not want Gotovina upsetting their well-laid plans and now their last “potential problem” has fallen into their hands, they will make certain Gotovina is wrapped-up one way or another, to ensure there is no further obstacle to consolidating their interests in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina.  The British have had centuries of experience in conquering; they are experts.  They don’t need bullets. With twisted propaganda, and cunning economics, they are already controlling Croatia.

A few years ago I wrote an article wherein I predicted that Croatia would become the whore of Europe. There were those who were shocked by that comment.  But what is unfolding under your noses is exactly that. Entry to the EU is a marriage that will never take place – except perhaps in some distant future, hand in hand with Serbia.  Beautiful, bountiful, blessed Croatia is being pimped by its own government under Sanader – even more than it was under Racan.  Foreigners will settle in its seaside towns and villages, putting their dollars in their foreign banks.  Croatia is falling further and further into debt with grandiose roads and facilities pandering to foreign needs. The tourist dollar alone cannot make up for depleted industries and forlorn agriculture. They will dump their goods on Croatia’s market place and indulge in its pleasures, taking all it has to offer and giving nothing in return.  Leaving only their waste behind when they return to their homelands during the winter.  Take note that in Spain there are now some fifty towns and villages on its coast which are predominantly British.  This will be Croatia’s future.

Worst still, in The Hague Courts Croatia’s good name is being dragged through the mud of slanderous propaganda. They are condemning the Homeland war and making criminals out of Croatia’s defenders. Across the world, on the internet, with fabricated misinformation about Jasenovac, Bleiburg and Krajina, they are labelling Croats as bloodthirsty fascists.

ALL of this is nothing more than an extension on what has already been done to Croatia in the past.  It was their manipulations that gained the first Yugoslavia, and then the second (yes – they worked well with Tito) and now they are at it again to establish an even bigger and better interest for themselves in Europe.  The capture of Gotovina is simply getting a nuisance out of their way.

Had the Americans any intention of coming clean on the part they played in ‘Operation Storm’ they would have done so by now and taken some action to quash the indictment against Gotovina.  Considering the significant involvement of the American military in ‘Operation Storm’ and every indication that Gotovina conducted himself throughout the exercise in an exemplary manner, plus the overwhelming evidence that the Serbs left the Krajina region of their own volition, it is hard to understand why the accusations are being upheld.  Which leads one to the obvious conclusion that the indictment is solely due to perverse political pressure, applied by Britain to keep a key-player out of their way.  And unfortunately for Gotovina, America is too indebted to Britain over the Iraq issue, to risk the ire of its British ally by supporting one individual, with no gain to itself.

Gotovina’s, and Croatia’s future, lie in God’s hands, and are dependent upon the slim possibility that amongst those with significant influence, who know this truth, there will awaken a profound human integrity that will rise to the occasion against these massive odds.  Let us pray for that.

The Vukusic “TROJAN HORSE”- ON BLEIBURG’S FIELD

It was reported on 12th June 2006, on the HRVATI-AMAC website, that Croatian Domobrans who had more closely inspected the new wording on the monument at Bleiburg were distressed to find that the original pertinent wording, which gave testimony to the greatest of Croatian tragedies, had been altered to a broad caption which recorded no Croatian involvement.

Tom Nuernberger, from Hrvatski Zbor, demanded an explanation from Bozo Vukusic, Secretary of Zapojednistvo Pocasnog Bleiburskog Voda, as to how and why this was done. Vukusic avoided answering the ten questions put to him, responding with a verbal diarrhoea of irrelevant material, and nonsense about Austrian pressure promoting the change. Until the Croatian Government, and UDBA, instigated trouble with the local authorities there were NO problems with the plaque, or the veterans, both of which had been accepted at Bleiburg for over half-a-century.

Tom Nuernberger’s questions were entirely relevant and should be answered by a more suitable member of the Zapojednistvo Pocasnog Bleiburskog Voda.  The substitution of the words is a gross violation of the original commemoration dedicated by the survivors to their fallen compatriots. What has been done is very provocative and requires explanation by those responsible:

The changing of such an important inscription has to require :
a) A recommendation by someone or some group
b) Discussion at a notified meeting by those responsible for the

   monument
c) Minutes recording the recommendation and discussion
d) A recording of who submitted the new wording and who proposed it

   be passed
e) A recording of who passed and who seconded the proposal
 f) And who funded the change

In May 2005 many people from Croatia, and around the world, gathered at a brand new memorial in Bleiburg, Austria, that was built especially (we were told) to honour the Croatian soldiers and their followers who suffered and died at the end of World War II – during what has become commonly known as the “Bleiburg Tragedy” and the “Krizni Put”.

Significantly, the majority attending the 60th Commemoration, as in previous years, were those to whom the catastrophic events, embodied in the word “Bleiburg”, have a deep and sorrowful meaning.  There were those who were survivors of that reign of communist terror.  And there were others who had lost loved ones – father, grandfather, brother – even mother, grandmother and sister – for women and children were not spared that blood-bath. Friends and supporters also attended – plus a few special invited guests.
BUT in 2005 there was another group who attended. A group whose interests lay elsewhere; who were there solely to ensure that the books about their  “NEW” history were distributed (at the several events they organized), to gullible foreign visitors and naive Croatian public – ie: “Cuvari Bleiburske Uspomene” and “Bleiburg memento”. These books, cleverly written by Bozo Vukusic, Josip Jurcevic, Bruno Esih, and their colleagues, appear to the hasty casual reader to honour the victims of the “Bleiburg Tragedy”, but to the diligent academic reader, it soon becomes obvious, with deeper scrutiny, that the books glorify the partisans and denigrate the Croatian soldiers into poor victims of  “Bleiburg”, deserving nothing more than pity.  NO respect is given to them, and absolutely NOTHING written about the
Independent State of Croatia (NDH), or what the Croatian soldiers were fighting for, or why they died. Without these facts the whole significance of “Bleiburg” is lost and with it the RESPECT those victims deserve.  What Vukusic and his colleagues did with the books, they did also to the “Bleiburg”

monument, which once carried the words:

U ^AST I SLAVU
POGINULOJ
HRVATSKOJ VOJSCI
SVIBANJ 1945

The memorial on the field was de-faced.  The pertinent message it carried for half-a-century chiselled-off without feeling and replaced with:

U SPOMEN
NA NEDU@NE @RTVE
BLEIBUR[KE TRAGEDIJE
MAI 1945

No longer does the plaque honour the Croatian soldiers, nor the injustice of their untimely death, nor the consequent vanquishing of the Croatian State.  (Even the month is not written in Croatian!)

Instead the new monument is an empty “Trojan Horse” with a deliberately vague text that leaves it open to interpretation by future generations made ignorant of that history by the Government.  New generations will naively wonder WHO the monument actually honours?  In its present wording the monument is dedicated indiscriminatingly to ALL the victims of the “Bleiburg Tragedy” – who apart from the hundreds of thousands of Croats – could include the comparatively small number of Serbs, Slovenes, Germans, Montenegrins, Bulgarians – and others involved in the conflict at that time, including the Partisans, who by murdering the unarmed Croatian military and their families were the brutal architects of the “Bleiburg Tragedy”.

The original memorial was erected by compatriots of the Croatian Armed Forces, in honour of their mates and WHAT THEY FOUGHT FOR – a
Croatia free from foreign domination. The unique phrase “Bleiburg Tragedy” was especially created, and has always meant, the CROATIAN victims - which were 99% of those slaughtered at the end of the war by Tito and his gang of cut-throats.  The half-a-million murdered were mostly members of the Croatian Armed Forces, their families and other civilian patriots of the NDH regime who had fought hard against the tyranny of communism and Serb-expansionism for a free democratic Croatia.  The “Bleiburg” monument was NEVER intended as a carte blanche for all those who died during that time – ie: the victims and their PERSECUTORS !

As I explained in my article of May 2005 “Hypocrisy – or what”, which was widely distributed, the building of the new monument and the 60th Commemoration was NOT what it appeared to be.  Both the Sanader and Racan Governments had deceitful reasons for supporting this initiative – and it had absolutely nothing to do with being nice. They deliberately developed a scheme whereby they intended with this monument to dilute, and eventually over time, totally destroy the significance of “Bleiburg” to the Croatian people.

The Government’s NEW historians and writers, have written that the Croatian victims of “Bleiburg” were a small number of patriotic but foolish soldiers and civilians, that unfortunately followed a few ruthless “war criminals” who had set-up an “illegal state that did not really exist” (as Sanader said on Croatian TV - and Mesic echoed in his speech at the Lisinski Hall in Zagreb last year).   Contrary to these statements there exist numerous factual accounts about the truth of the NDH regime, which prove beyond any doubt the inaccuracy of the history as written by these NEW historians.

Ironically, what should have been, and what could have been, a long overdue, hugely unifying event on the 60th Commemoration for ALL Croatians, was reduced to nothing more than a big propaganda exercise by the Croatian government in an effort to decrease the significance of “Bleiburg.”

Question:
When both Sanader and Mesic say they do not recognise the existence of the Independent State of 1941-45, and they continue to persecute the fighters for Croatia of that time (eg: Budak, Francetic) WHY did they and their government build this monument and put so much effort into the 60th Commemoration?
Answer: Because the government was doing a double-cross.  They employed Vukusic and his colleagues to infiltrate patriotic organizations (through the HDZ), manipulate the members, and so dominate ALL important matters dealing with “Bleiburg” - the history, the monuments AND the supporters – especially the immigrants.  By using the monument and their NEW history books as “Trojan-horses” Vukusic and his UDBA mates are making sure that the “Bleiburg” story is diluted and that it will eventually disappear into mythology – along with the NDH.

Considering his background it is remarkable Vukusic could so easily take control of the Zapojednistvo Pocasnog Bleiburskog Voda and without much difficulty control their decision-making. Obviously his glib tongue enabled him to persuade the Committee to become unsuspecting engineers of Vukusic’s “Trojan-Horse” on the Bleiburg field and innocent pawns in the Government’s strategy. Still, one has to ask how it was possible that a man, who was condemned for the killing of an Albanian civilian in Germany during the 1980s and to prison for life, could gain without difficulty the position of secretary and spokesperson for an honourable, compassionate, organization such as the Pocasnog Bleiburskog Voda?  It demands explanation as to how he was released at the start of the Domovinski Rat and almost over-night employed by the YUGO-government to be in charge of researching the lives of post-WWII Croatian immigrants?  Why is it the foul stench of UDBA seems to hang over this sordid history?

The Croatian government, dominated by a majority of self-interested YUGO-communists from yesteryear, plan to stay in power by preventing Croats, especially from immigration, using their influence to remove them democratically from the Sabor.

The Government strategy is to weaken and destroy the strong Croatian spirit that has been kept alive in immigration – the patriotic “fire” built on the memory of “Bleiburg”.  Naturally the Yugoites in the Sabor are keen to implement this strategy – which keeps them in power and prevents the danger of post-WWII communist mass-murderers being brought to trial, and their own dark secrets exposed to everyone.

Through manipulations at The Hague, and within the EU, the Croatian Government have become puppets of England’s “political advisors”, thus the Government’s subterfuge with watering-down “Bleiburg” will also work very well for England – because the eventual decline of “Bleiburg” will, firstly, rid them of an embarrassment (about the dirty part they played in WWII, which they would prefer remained hidden) and secondly, it would weaken Croatian resistance to England’s new colonizing efforts in controlling Croatia – by curbing the fire that ignited the great patriotic drive amongst Croatia’s immigrants (which gained Croatia its new independence).

The “Trojan-Horse” monument and books do NOT represent the reality of “Bleiburg” and the NDH.  They are NOT the historical truth that we should pass on to our children. If we accept this, then the reality is that in the near future, this will also be the fate of the “Domovinski Rat” and its soldiers, who are being systematically eradicated by the Croatian government through the Hague Courts.

Their eradication will bring about the destruction of the integrity and sovereignty of
Croatia, forcing on to Croats another guilt complex – similar to the guilt that existed during the time of communist Yugoslavia when “Croat” was a dirty word.  During the communist regime it was not so obvious, but now it is easy to see, that we have today the same anti-Croat forces at work trying to destroy Croatia with lies and false propaganda, creating an untrue, twisted history. THIS is how Croatia’s enemies gained control of the Croats after WWII.

The text on the
Bleiburg Monument needs to be restored to its original, correct and pertinent wording.  The Croatian veterans, and their staunch supporters around the world must ensure this is done as soon as possible. “Bleiburg” is the greatest symbol of Croatian nationhood - it has been the driving force of Croatia’s patriots throughout the past century in their struggles for independence.  As “Gallipolli” is to the Anzacs, as the “French Revolution” is to the French, as “Independence Day” is to the Americans – so should be “Bleiburg” to all Croatians.  The safeguarding of “Bleiburg” is supremely important to the future of a free, sovereign, Croatia.
